Mothecombe survey at Orchard Farm

What a wonderful way to spend a sunny afternoon! More than 35 people (at least half of whom were under the age of eight!) came out to Mothecombe today to look for harvest mouse nests, and with so many pairs of eyes we found 16 of them!

Two were in the herbal ley where we’d found all of the nests last year. We also spotted lots of beautiful wasp spider cocoons there too. A fantastic fourteen nests were in a 2m deep strip of cocksfoot along a fence-line, in an area that two years ago had been a ploughed field. It was wonderful to see such nature-friendly farming in action and also so many beaming faces when each new nest was discovered.

Thank you to Jess and Joe for hosting us (and providing tea and cake!) and to everyone who came along to help. 🙂
